Give The People What They Want" is undoubtedly a most appropriate title for the latest release from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. After a decade of only pausing their tours to go into the studio, they know what you want audiences want from them, and luckily that's exactly what Sharon Jones and her dap kings want too.

It's no wonder that this band hasn't lost any of its appeal to this day. On the contrary: Michael Bublé sang "Baby, You've Got What it Takes" in a duet with Sharon after he hired the Dap-Kings as a backing band for "Crazy Love" in 2009. The Dap-Kings also collaborated on a number of songs on his hit album this year, To Be Loved. They have worked with the likes of Beck, John Legend, Lou Reed and Rufus Wainwright, and of course the Dap-Kings co-authored Amy Winehouse's Back In Black album, which featured Gabriel Roth, bandleader and co-founder of Daptone Records, was awarded a Grammy as an Engineer.

But it's Augusta, Georgia-born Sharon Jones who is the undisputed center of attention here. Her recent stint in Hollywood, starring alongside Denzel Washington, certainly won't detract from her star credentials, but it's enough to listen to "Give The People What They Want" to know that Sharon doesn't need a screen, to make a big impression: while Sharon's haunting, passionate voice goes straight to the heart, her soul hooks get stuck in your head for days. Anyone who can sing like that can stand any comparison with the greats of soul.

'Give The People What They Want' is the band's fifth studio album, and was recorded at the Daptones' home in Bushwick, at the House Of Soul studios - after touring for two years with 2010's predecessor 'I Learned The Hard Way' were. As expected, these ten songs shine with the classic soul sound the Daptones are accustomed to - and yet there is this freshness in the band's playing and songwriting, thanks to which the album sounds different than anything they have done before. From the opener "Retreat!", an electrifying stomper, to the immediately familiar-sounding feel-good groove of "We Get Along", to "Stranger To My Happiness", which offers everything you could imagine from the sound of the Dap-Kings promises, this record lives up to its title: "Give The People What They Want". But hello!
