<colgroup><col width="363"></colgroup>

Gatefold LP comes with a 4-pages big size inlay with liner notes, exclusive pictures and a double page poster (30x60cm)
Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

12" Vinyl Edition of our second release. I had asked Eamon Ore-Giron - aka DJ Lengua - if he would be interested in compiling a Latin project for Analog Africa, and if so, if he had a theme in mind. He replied, "Have you ever heard of Rebajada?" The question mark above my head, together with the wall of China, must have been the only other object visible from out of space because Eamon, probably noticing I got paralysed, continued, "Rebajada in Spanish means "to reduce, lowered". It's basically Mexican sonideros (sound-system operators) slowing down the beat of a Cumbia to create a much more tangible music to dance to. I'll send you a mix I made last year and let me know what you think." And so he did.

That mix was called Rebajada Mota Mix and I began listening to it on a loop. Although I was not immediately hooked it was intriguing from the get-go, and so I kept listening until magic began unfolding. Slowed down music allows you enough time to hear right through it, revealing itself in ways I had rarely experienced before. Everything became more transparent and I was noticing sounds normally only perceptible by bats. A near psychedelic experience. That mysterious mix included a few Ecuadorian songs by Junior y su Equipo - aka Polibio Mayorga (a cult figure in the sonidero scene), a couple of Mexican tunes, one Colombian, and various Peruvian songs, undoubtedly the driving force behind this project.

The sonidero who brought Peruvian and Ecuadorian music to Mexico was the legendary Pablo Perea from Sonido Arco-Iris, and although his fingerprints are all over the compilation Saturno 2000, this selection of songs in rebajada is exclusive to DJ Lengua. With the exception of a few classics from Polibio Mayorga and La Sampuesana – the queen of all rebajadas – most of these songs were probably never performed as such before, let alone released.

So how did rebajada come to be? In a nutshell; Rebajada started with two families of brothers – the Pereas and the Ortegas – who travelled all over Latin America and returned to Mexico with heavy loads of records which they would sell to the various sonideros always on the lookout for new tunes. Colombian beats especially seemed to fit almost perfectly with the Mexican dance steps – but they were just a bit too fast. As a result some sonideros began experimenting with equipment, and Marco Antonio Cedillo of Sonido Imperial created a revolutionary pitching system that could slow records down to an extent other players could only dream about. And so rebajada was born... or so we thought.

At the same time in north of the country, in Monterrey, sonidero Gabriel Dueñez almost got electrocuted by a short circuit that nearly set his record player on fire. As a result the platter started spinning in slow motion for the rest of the party, turning Cumbia into a different affair altogether. The youngsters went crazy for it and started harassing the sonidero with requests to record cassettes for them. Reluctant at first, Dueñez finally began recording a series of pirated cassettes called "Rebajada" which included mainly Colombian cumbia and porro in slow-mo exclusively. Those tapes took the city by storm and turned rebajada into a celebrated and defiant movement of the youth.

Of course it would not be a Mexican urban legend if it didn't include dramaturgical elements, and so for nearly 30 years, until this day and probably for ever, both cities have been arguing and claiming ownership the creation of rebajada for themselves. The success of their performances prompted a further tour in 1972. According to Rodolphe Bépka, the audience enthusiasm Vibro encountered was bewildering. "We filled the old military stadium in Yaoundé in 1970, in 1972 the new Amadou Haïdjo stadium ... We are running with great success in the cities.” Their popularity was also growing in Chad, where they would tour several times through the early and mid 70's.

Towards the end of 1976, Vibro Success decided to take their music global and introduce Central African music to listeners worldwide. It worked. The turning point came in Nigeria. There the group achieved extraordinary success, with live performances followed by contracts with local labels like Scottie and Ben/Clover resulting in hit releases. Nearly all those groups started their recording careers in the label's studios based in the commercial heart of Aba, Abia State, one of Southeastern Nigeria’s largest cities. Making matters worse, the domestic economic downturn accelerated, forcing the orchestra to slowly end its activities . Ayeni had their early releases already in the very early 60's and the music had already the magical touch that made it famous in the decades to follow.
As said before we have been looking for a worthy sequel of our 2nd release and during this travel we had the incredible luck to find one of the rarer album from the area , Prince Bolingo Akaba – Airende , a mid 80's release that have a lot of points in common with the Ode-Omore album , lot of the musicians are the same and as conseguence the synthy cosmic sound is still there but with an “Etsakor” verson of it.

“A colourful LP. No balafon, no kora - only the “skins” support the singers. However, in 2012, Peter, along with his band based in Lyon, France, decided to explore and codify the musical scales that are found in sacred or profane songs of Beninese and Togolese Voodoo so they can be played easily on modern instruments. Peter composed the album Apiafo, using the two main musical scales of this tradition.
The first musical scale on Apiafo leans towards raw Funk with a sound similar to the famous 70’s bands, L’Orchestre Poly Rythmo De Cotonou and El Rego. Funk, is the skeletal structure of this record, and provided the opportunity for Peter to invite his uncle, Roger Damawuzan - the famous pioneer of the 70s Soul scene - on two tracks. Their collaboration on “Pas Contente” is a highlight on this 100% analog album. Unchanged, seemingly untouched, just a guard watching over it- one wondered whether the place would ever see the light of day again. Built in the 70s by Scotch, there were only twenty such places in the entire world. Twenty studios, all identical. Most had undergone a digital makeover in the 80s, but not this one - situated in Lomé, this studio had stayed true to its original form. Silent and uninhabited but waiting for one thing, and one thing only: for the sacred fire to be lit once again. That of the Togolese Recording Office. Studio OTODI for those in the know.
Through thick layers of dust, the console was vibrating still, impatient to be turned on and spurt out the sound so unique to analog. That sound is what Peter Solo and his band Vaudou Game came to seek out. The original vibrations of Lomé’s sound, resonating within the studio space, an undercurrent pulsing within the walls, the floor, the entire atmosphere. A presence at once electrical and mystical, sourced through the amps that had never really gone cold, despite the deep sleep that they had been forced into. In taking over the studio’s 3000 square feet, enough to house a full orchestra, Vaudou Game had the space necessary to conjure the spirits of voodoo, those very spirits who watch over men and nature, and with whom Peter converses every day.

For the most authentic of frequencies to fully imbibe this third album, Peter Solo entrusted the rhythmic section to a Togolese bass and drum duo, putting the groove in the expert hands of those versed in feeling and a type of musicianship that you can’t learn in any school. This was also a way to put OTODI on the path of a more heavily hued funk sound- the backbone of which maintains flexibility and agility when moving over to highlife, straightens out when enhanced with frequent guest Roger Damawuzan’s James Brown type screams, and softens when making the way for soulful strings. Snaking and undulating when a chorus of Togolese women takes over, guiding it towards a slow, hypnotic trance.

Up until now, Vaudou Game had maintained their connection to Togo from their base in France. DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson are French composers and Afro-soul singers. The duo is creating a new vibe with French sounds and mixing it with jazz, Afrobeat, electronic, and soul. T'es Qui? (HC 034CD, 2015) was their first album released in 2015 and re-released a year later under the name Remets T'es Qui? (HC 044CD/LP, 2016). It was result of an intense collaboration that has lasted many years, on stage and in the studio. They call their music "Afropean songs", a collection of jazzy-pop melodies, Afro-soul, and funk arrangements. This album has 15 songs and features a tribute to the famous poet Aimé Césaire on the title. The Antilles are also honored with creole lyrics, and if you listen carefully -- you'll hear them distilled within the album. La Montagne Pelée's eruption in 1902 is evoked under the prism of August Cyparis, one of the three survivors. The rhythms are tight and focused, with some Antilles, but also Detroit elements thrown in, accompanied with a strong horns section, vibraphone, and analog drums. There are lots of echoes from the era of jazz funk and the lyrical French mode, mixed with some slightly warmer currents that show their wider love of modern funk and eclectic tastes. It is a unique sound, an original recipe, using French wordplay with a universal message. In the summer of 2018, they presented the now critically acclaimed first single "El Nino" (HC 057EP), an Afro-funk gem about climate change, and "Fontaine", an Afro hit with a great combination of analog take and electronic dancefloor ingredients. So we aimed at keeping
the gritty urban menacing sound and poetry of Afrobeat with the percussive mass rumble of Batucada with the poignant beauty of Carioca. We then got in touch Cristina Violle, the first lady of “Samba de Roda” in Paris who graced us with a startling inspired and heartfelt melody to address the same issues of hope, resilience, courage and humility; the people who live in Africa’s shanty towns of Brazil’s favelas again have in common a shared living experience. The first completed version of the song then briefly went on alternative radio, we also made plans to release a 12” vinyl version of it, but for one way or another the vibe wasn’t right, things weren’t really happening and we shelved the project, without thinking we would get back to it again...until a
few months ago.
We went back to the studio last summer and started ironing the song again from scratch. That same initial
spirit and energy caught hold of us again from the day we started and, like for Francis Bebey’s “New Track” in 1982 or King Sunny Ade’s “Syncro System” in 1983 who were recorded in Paris over 35 years ago, we worked
relentlessly to create a balanced but experimental track showcasing rootsy sound, pop instrumentation, tight
world beat drumming, song structure, jazzy horns, spacey synthesizers, choral-like vocal harmonies with call
and response figurative vocals. The recent “explosion of the African arts” as Fela Kuti had prophesized it has blossomed into a worldwide celebration of race, identity and empowerment; it demonstrates that these very turbulent political and social times we’re living will encourage young and older people to seek for more cultural knowledge and make them realize that the layer of the African cultural existence is fundamental, and more importantly globally accepted. African cultures smashed through deserts, across routes, traveled borders disregarding modern day notions of geography and race for centuries; today they are varied and diverse,
yet a common thread latches these identities into one family; an infinitely large network of ‘life forces’.
We now proudly present this brand new record; just like the sightseeing you have while strolling through
the streets of Paris nowadays, it may seem raggedy and raw at first but underneath the surface, there is an underlying tension and complexity that mirrors the contradictions and issues of this society trapped in a
labyrinth of identity crisis: against race and class antagonism as well as immigration versus citizenship debate.
Much of the same could be pointed out about other multi-racial societies such as the present day Brazilian one;
But ultimately, artists and the civil society will have to keep on seeking for innovative ways to reinvent social
discourse and use whichever tool they may have at their disposal to address the ills of a society doomed to
progress and evolve or grow gradually impoverished. Like our predecessors years ago, we subconsciously did
our best to keep alive a longtime tradition of cultural tradition of African Artistic Renaissance, pushing further musical themes of contemporary African sound.
